I have a problem involving a DLC from XBL?

Alright, this may sound stupid, but I don't have Xbox Live. But there is a DLC I want. On my Xbox I have a 20 gig External Harddrive, and a small one in the slots underneath the disc holder thing, (Sorry, don't know the name) and a friend of mine does have XBL. Is it possible for him to download it put on my smaller harddrive, then I save it to my normal harddrive or do I have to sign upfor XBL to get 1 DLC?
